Is our education standard getting better?
I remember attending to the O'L top ten ceremony 2yrs ago snce my sis was one of the proud many. if i remember correctly there were 132 students who got chosen for the top TEN. The education minister came up to give his speech and he was showing a slideshow to everyone as he walked through his speech. He was telling everyone that new schools had participated all throughout the islands and that 100s more students had done o'ls from schools such as Majeedhiyya, ameeniyya etc. All compared to the previous year.
What he said next shocked me. he said that the current year there were about 30 students or so more in the top 10 list and that it was a gr8 achievement and sumthing which showed that students of maldives had vastly improved. that the education ministry was doing such a gr8 job and what a HUGE success it was. everyone started clapping with huge smiles on their faces. i looked around the hall and thought to myself "WTF??!!"
ill give a small example. its like last year 100 students participated and 20 students were among the top 10. and this year 500 students participated and 30 students were among the top ten. that this was a HUGE improvement. ??????!!!!!! How can that be called improvement? it was more than obvious that its a huge decline in their education.
I have a cousin bro anee, about 5yrs older than me who is a genius. He got second place from the whole country in his O’Ls with 11A’s, 4B’s and 1C. He studied all three streams, more than half the subjects without any tutoring and schooling since we can study jes 1 stream at school. These were the times when the much tougher London exams were conducted and an 8A would probably land u as 10th place in the top 10s. He also got best all round from Majeedhiyya. Afterwards he once again got second place from the whole country in his A’Ls with 4As and 2Bs(islam and dhiv excluded). those were the days when students could show jes how good they were. there werent limited. but what happened next?
Soon students werent allowed to do more than 8 subjects. then again they changed from London to the much easier cambridge. This is the point where most of u would disagree with me saying that cambridge aint easy. All throughout the time when London was done, there was only one person who got 8A's....AFTER students were limited to 8subjects.the instant the system was changed to cambridge there were 4 students who got 8A's. I wont believe for once that Maldivian students got a hell lot brighter than all the previous years(those years where students did twice more subjects and scored excellent grades) in jes one year. the exams jes got easier
even A'Ls, when we did it the subject maths had P1, P2, P3 and M1, M2 and M3. students started failing in maths more than other subjects. And jes like that sumthing new happened. M3 was excluded from the syllabus. and that was the toughest paper. Now its C1, C2, C3 and C4 instead of all the Ps. those 3 papers were extended to four papers. the topics were the same. and now it is claimed again that students have gotten better results in maths. vats up with that? anyone pls care to clear this doubt for me.....if this is indeed a mistake in my views?

chubs. thanks for classifying me as a genius.
i agree with u almost all the way. this has been a fact that i have been emphasising. but sadly people dont really care. who wud. from the parents perspective the previous system showed that their kids sucked. but with the new system they shine. so y wud they complain. but then wat. they go to the university n they start struggling (unless ofcourse u go to a crappy place n come back with a no good degree but top of the class yet knowing nothing) n u keep wondering why. frankly speaking the current system doesnt seperate the men from the boys. the teachers gotta take some of the blame too. refer to my recent blog post. so all in all the education system is going down the drains n the people incharge are just using clever statistics to prove that it isnt.
I'm of the opinion that the overall standard of education in institutions are on the decline ...
but kids r getting smarter ...
parents work hard to and follow very strict rules to educate and smarten up their kids ...
i'm guessing the next generation will yield more academicians ...
i do agree that the kids are getting smarter but nothing concrete is actually being done to harness their brains. i'v seen a few smart kids who lose interest somewhere along the line. i do believe that parents are working hard to smarten up their kids. but that is just only a very FEW. most just push their kids cos they regret their lack of education. sadly at occassions they just push their kids until the kid breaks. more like brute force rather than ingenuity
but wat is there to see how good or smart is the child, the o levels or a levels....
the system is made easy so that it seen that education in maldives is improving which in fact where it is on the decline and which parent wud believe the system is weaker cause the results of the top is better and more children pass thats wat each parents want the passing of their children...they dont see the level of the education is down from wat it was
all these years education hav been tryin to make it "easier" which wud result in this decline
anee u r right....even with A levels i am suffering here studying..but during time in male' it was all so easy...when the level has increased their is a missing gap
PS kaizey anee is 7 years older than u....hehehe
Really? 7years? OMG. !XOBILE. heheh. come to think of it.ur right anonymous. I still dunno hu u r though.hehe.
subcorpus: i agree with u, parents are trying much harder and the parent now are able to help their children better since their education is good too. and they do spend much more on tuitions etc. but i also agree with the_sm. thanx for the comments. actually thote ppl wud go against me on this.hehe.mayb its yet to come :)
hehehe maybe my opinion is biased coz i did cambridge too....but theres a reason why the UK skools are going with the cambridge o levels and abolishing the london exams. It's not cause Cambdridge is harder or anything, I wouldn't kno coz i never did Edexcel...but it seems that Cambridge prepares u better for uni where it isn't based entirely on text book knowledge. I don't for a sec think that u guys were less brighter or anything compared to the students doing Ol's nowadays....but we studied as hard and expections rise by the year...so it seems pretty unfair to base our results on the opinion that exams are just easier.
They only want results. not development.
everyday and everyway there are things that our education go down the drain and nobody who can do sometihn not much really gives a damn...
Its the old Statistique trick.
500 men go in and 30 come out, versus 100 men in and 10 come out. A tactic used in shops to make prices more attractive.
50.00US$, or 45.99US$?
